A Master of Education (M.Ed.) degree from King University will provide you with the skills and expertise to connect research and knowledge gained in coursework to actual classroom settings. You will be prepared to synthesize research and theory, as well as practice and apply those skills to your teaching method. You will be trained to interpret professional literature and to apply best practices in multiple and complex situations.

New for Spring of 2018 is the English as a Second Language (ESL) Endorsement. In two semesters, earn an additional endorsement online to your teaching license. Endorsment is Tennessee approved and meets the Virginia Standards. For more information about the ESL Endorsement click here.

M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction

The Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction assists students in developing specialized knowledge, skills, and dispositions which characterize excellent teachers. Students seeking initial licensure in Elementary Education (K-5) and in Secondary Education (6-12), Music K-12 (Vocal and Instrumental), as well as Physical Education K-12. Student Learning Outcomes are aligned with the Tennessee Teacher Licensure Standards: Professional Education and In TASC Standards: Interstate Teacher Assessment and Support Consortium. Students complete 37 semester hours of course work over 16 months; a full semester of student teaching follows. Three starts are available each year - spring, summer, and fall. Contact your Enrollment Counselor for details. Candidates must hold an undergraduate degree in the subject area, or have passed the praxis content exam(s) in the licensure area, or complete the appropriate courses for licensure.

M.Ed. in Instructional Leadership

The M.Ed. in Instructional Leadership is designed for licensed teachers who desire to serve their schools in formal administrative capacities (e.g. as assistant or vice-principals or principals). The M.Ed. is based largely on the Tennessee Instructional Leadership Standards (TILS), a set of standards that seeks to "reinvent the principal preparation process" in the state of Tennessee to cultivate effective instructional leaders who are prepared to implement research based changes in curriculum and instruction for the benefit of all groups of students. 

The M.Ed. in Instructional Leadership is a 16 month, 36 semester hour program that spans four consecutive semesters. Candidates shall hold a current teacher license; have a minimum of three years of successful classroom experience; and submit a confidential application portfolio that addresses:

  • Candidate's most recent performance appraisal
  • Relevant professional development
  • Success in improving student achievement
  • Knowledge about curriculum, instruction and assessment
  • Experience in coaching, collaboration, cooperation and relationship building with other teachers.
